One Less Safe Place to Play DDR

There’s been shootings and stabbings at Broadway City Arcade, one of the major places in NYC to play Dance Dance Revolution. Apparently this took place during the hours when they open up one of their floors as a dive nightclub.

My immediate response was to wonder whether this was a Crip Walk-related incident, but the article says gang activity was ruled out. This can’t be good for Giuliani’s Times Square, though. Frankly, it’s not any good for local DDR, either. Braodway City has the best viewing setup anywhere in town, and a lot of the best dancers used to hang out there.

I just want to note this weird sentence from the article:

“The fight broke out about 2:40 a.m. in the club of the Broadway City Arcade on West 42nd Street, the street where the theaters present “The Lion King” and “42nd Street.””

1) Who doesn’t know what 42nd Street is? 2) Is naming two musicals — one named FOR 42nd Street and the other a knock-off of a Disney movie — really going to help anyone who ISN’T familiar with 42nd Street understand where this took place?

Over Two Hundred Scientists Named Steve Agree…

that “Evolution is a vital, well-supported, unifying principle of the biological sciences.” On February 16th the National Center for Science Education released a statement to this effect. Why Steve? “In honor of the late Harvard zoologist and geologist Stephen Jay Gould, a valiant supporter of both evolution education and NCSE,” NCSE representative Eugenie C. Scott explained. “We hope that the next time creationists present a list of ‘scientific dissenters from evolution’, reporters will ask, ‘How many of them are named Steve?'”

Peace Through Puppetry

A pretty well-known means of promoting peace, these days, with Bread and Puppet offspring showing up at virtually every march. But I just stumbled across the website of UNIMA-USA, the US arm of an international organization (l’Union Internationale de la Marionette) whose goal is promoting “peace and… mutual understanding” through the use of puppetry. Jim Henson was the first US chair, in 1966. Includes a directory of puppet theaters all over the US.

That's Jillette, Not Like The Razor

“I said, ‘Well, it’s not really the right word, but freedom is kind of a hobby with me, and I have disposable income that I’ll spend to find out how to get people more of it.'”

Penn Jillette (of the comedy/magic team Penn and Teller) is recording his experiences with increased flight security measures. Good on him.

And now, your moment of Zen:

I shit you not. Bought by a University of Wisconsin undergrad.
